Why Short Circuits Happen — Causes & What To Do
Short circuits are one of the most common electrical emergencies in Pakistani homes — and one of the most misunderstood. Here's what actually causes them and what to do when one happens.
What Is a Short Circuit?
A short circuit happens when electrical current takes an unintended path — usually because a live wire makes contact with a neutral wire, the earth, or a conductor it should never touch. Instead of flowing through your appliance (which acts as resistance), the current surges through a zero-resistance path, causing an immediate and dangerous spike in current.
Your circuit breaker or MCB is designed to detect this surge and trip immediately, cutting power to that circuit. This is normal and correct behaviour — it is your protection working.
Most Common Causes of Short Circuits in Pakistan
1. Old or damaged wiring
Many homes in Wah Cantt and surrounding areas still have aluminium wiring from the 1970s–80s. Aluminium wire oxidises over time, creating resistance at connection points, loosening from terminals, and eventually causing arcing and short circuits. If your home is more than 20 years old and has never been rewired, this is the most likely cause of repeated electrical faults.
2. Overloaded circuits
Pakistan's load-shedding culture has created a habit of plugging multiple high-load appliances — AC, fridge, washing machine, microwave — into the same circuit via extension boards. When power returns after a break, all appliances start simultaneously, drawing far more current than the circuit was designed for. This causes the breaker to trip, and over time, damages wire insulation.
3. Water entering electrical fittings
Water is an excellent conductor of electricity. In Pakistani homes, bathroom wiring, rooftop water tanks and pipe leaks frequently bring water into contact with electrical fittings. Even a small amount of moisture inside a socket or switchboard can cause an immediate short circuit.
4. Loose or poorly made connections
Electrical connections that were not tightened properly — especially at switchboards, meter boxes and distribution panels — vibrate loose over time. A loose live wire can touch a neutral wire inside the box, causing a short circuit with no visible external cause.
5. Rodent damage
Rats and mice frequently chew through wire insulation, especially in roof spaces and behind walls where wires run through cavities. Once the insulation is breached, the bare copper wire can easily touch another conductor.
⚠️ If you smell burning from a socket or switchboard — do not touch it. Turn off the main breaker at your distribution board immediately and call a licensed electrician. A burning smell indicates arcing, which is a fire hazard.
What To Do When a Short Circuit Happens
- Don't panic. The breaker tripping is the protection working correctly.
- Unplug all appliances from the affected circuit before doing anything else.
- Try to reset the breaker once — push it firmly to OFF then back to ON. If it trips immediately again, stop. Repeated resetting of a tripping breaker is dangerous.
- Identify which circuit is affected. Each MCB in your distribution board controls a specific circuit. Check which one tripped.
- Call a licensed electrician to diagnose the fault properly. Do not attempt to open the distribution board yourself.

How to Prevent Short Circuits
- Have your home's wiring inspected every 5 years by a licensed electrician
- Never overload extension boards — use dedicated circuits for high-load appliances
- Ensure all outdoor and bathroom sockets are properly weatherproofed
- Replace any socket or switch that feels warm or shows burn marks immediately
- Check that your distribution board has properly rated MCBs for each circuit
